THE STANDOUT RESULT
  • Corn was planted 2 to 4 June, roughly two weeks behind the typical local date of 15 May.
  • Seedlings emerged 9 to 11 June, about a week after planting, which Mallet says he had never seen before.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The circumstances are what make this one interesting. This was not a showcase planting. It was a salvage operation on 300 acres a vole population had destroyed, planted two weeks late by a farmer whose input budget was already gone.

So the crop got no fertilizer, less water than intended because the pivots kept bogging, and a compressed season. It emerged in a week and finished at nine to ten feet with full cobs. Whatever else is true, the crop did not behave like one that had been starved.

The honest reading is that too many things changed at once to attribute any of it. Late planting, no fertilizer, and accidentally reduced irrigation are three variables moving together, and a good season for soil temperature sits underneath all of them. Mallet says as much himself.

There is also no yield figure. The corn was headed for the chopper as silage and had not been weighed when the interview was recorded, so the strongest quantitative thing in the account, tonnage off those 300 acres, is the one number nobody has yet. Worth asking Sean for it.

Findings that cut against the headline. We publish them because a grower deciding on a retrofit deserves the whole picture.

  • Single farm, single season, with no side-by-side control plot, so outcomes cannot be attributed to the vortex generator.
  • Multiple agronomic variables changed at once: a later planting date, no fertilizer application, and reduced irrigation from equipment malfunction. No single causal factor can be isolated.
  • Voltage readings were taken with a handheld consumer meter, not calibrated or laboratory-verified equipment, and their agronomic meaning is not established.
  • No formal yield weighing, Brix testing or soil biology data was collected. Final yield figures were unavailable at filming.
  • Favourable soil temperature is acknowledged by the grower as a contributing factor to the rapid germination.
